I've recently been binge-watching the iconic 90s hit show ‘Sex and the City’ and I've noticed a resurgence of the show online, with many Gen Z audiences discovering this show for the first time. And I couldn't help but wonder... what would the show be like if it swapped the glamorous streets of Manhattan for the budget lives of Leeds students, navigating their degrees with hobbies, romance, flat mates and friendships.
Carrie Bradshaw
The main protagonist of the show, Carrie, would be a Journalism student who writes for the fashion section of the Gryphon Newspaper and helps run the Leeds RAG Fashion Show. Often her passion for fashion comes at a great price. With the cost of living rising, Carrie is constantly battling to find more budget-friendly ways to fuel her
shopping addiction. Perhaps she’d become a thrifting guru, shopping at Leeds’ range of vintage and secondhand clothing stores, like COW and North South Vintage, as well as using online platforms like Vinted and Depop. Carrie would love to document her fashion finds online, growing a following of like-minded students who want to look good
whilst spending less. She’d soon become a bit of a micro-influencer and celeb around campus! But her on-and-off relationship with Mr. Big (a Business student with BIG wallet) results in nights spent stalking him on snap maps, obsessing over his instagram, and inevitably kissing him on drunken nights out. Whilst her friends tell her to dump him,
Carrie’s optimism often leaves her staring at her phone waiting for him to text.
Charlotte York
The perfectly neat and organised Charlotte would be a Fine Art Student, who spends her time grafting in the library determined to graduate with a first. Her obsession with perfection would label her as the ‘neat freak’ flatmate, who is often leaving passive aggressive messages in the group chat about the untidiness of the flat kitchen and its
lack of hygiene. She’d spend her free time volunteering at the Leeds Art Gallery and shopping in some of the more high-end shopping arcades in the town centre. In her dating life, Charlotte resists the hookup culture and online dating apps that so many students turn to. A hopeless romantic, she waits for her prince charming, hoping to
bump into him when reading in Hyde Park Book Club, studying in the library, or elegantly sipping a cocktail in Belgrave.
Miranda Hobbes
The fiercely independent Miranda would be studying Law, with her passion for justice fueling her commitment to the Feminist Society, where she advocates for women's safety on and around campus. She’d also be a member of the cross-country society, training to run the Leeds Marathon. Miranda’s judgmental tendencies might lead her to
butt heads with her housemates, unafraid to tell them the honest truth. But she is always there to pick up the phone when her friends need advice, or when they need saved from a disastrous Hinge date! As a chocoholic, she’d be a number one customer at Get Baked, unashamed to treat herself to a slice of Bruce cake after completing a
grueling deadline – everyone needs a celebratory sweet treat!
Samantha Jones
Using her skill from studying Business Management with Marketing, Samantha would be running her own little side hustle to help pay her bills. She would help organise and promote the best student events, from secret raves to house parties in Hyde Park. She'd know all the best DJs – many who are past situationships. Her evenings would be
spent going on Hinge dates with guys she’d inevitably ghost but end up bumping into in the library the following week. Her endless charisma would allow her to flirt her way into free entry to Mischief every week, as well as free drinks for her and the girls. Samantha Jones would be THE it girl of Hyde Park, both empowering to women and intimidating to
men.
And so, I wonder...am I a Leeds version of Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda or Samantha?
Maybe a mixture of a few?
Who do you think you are?
