Breast Cancer Awareness Month: the importance of the colour pink

By Emma White

This October has been home to breast cancer awareness month. Once a year, ‘Breast Cancer Now’ are the charity organisers of a whole month of fundraising; A celebration of life, perseverance and survival, stories all told through the colour pink. With a 1/8 diagnosis rate and 1 diagnosis every 10 minutes, the necessity for awareness is ever apparent. As a very chilled, easy way to fundraise in unity with the entire country, they have raised 33 million since starting in 2002. However, as a busy month of fundraising draws to a close, there are plenty of other opportunities to aid in the fight against breast cancer.

Race for Life:

A really fun way to get involved is by participating in Cancer Research’s ‘Race for Life’. Speaking from personal experience, it is an incredibly fun and emotive race which immerses you in such a great celebration of life. I recommend the ‘Pretty Muddy’ fun run which I completed in 2018 alongside my friendship group. Collectively we fundraised over £1,000 so it was a great success! A 5k obstacle course is certainly not for the faint hearted, but with friends and family at every corner it is super easy to power through and get to the finish line. Even better, the race finishes in style with a huge mud slide! You can participate at hundreds of venues across the UK so there is always a race taking place near wherever home is for you. With 5k or 10k available, very little experience is necessary. It is all about perseverance! Currently they have an online discount code, RACE2020 for 30% off, which would greatly discount your entry fee!

CoppaFeel:

Last year’s ‘Uncensored’ issue kindly featured a collaboration with the charity ‘CoppaFeel’. As a Leeds University society, you can get hands on (quite literally) whilst educating both yourself and others about the very real risk of breast cancer. They were a great addition to the launch and provided amazing resources that you can get your hands on through the society page. As well as checking their website out, be sure to check your boobs too! See below for CoppaFeel’s advice on what to look out for.
